Maestro cards will gradually disappear in Belgium

Around 10 million Maestro debit cards are in circulation in Belgium. These cards will gradually disappear starting from July 1st to make way for a new debit card that will better cater to new online shopping practices.

The company has decided to replace all Maestro cards in Europe with a new card, the Debit Mastercard, offering more convenience for online payments and wider acceptance abroad, whereas Maestro was barely present outside the Old Continent.

Online commerce has experienced rapid growth since the coronavirus crisis. Last year, 8.5 million Belgians made online purchases amounting to approximately 15 billion euros, with most transactions being made using a debit card, according to figures presented by the BeCommerce association.

Starting from July 1st, the new Mastercard debit cards and cards up for renewal or replacement will be Debit Mastercards. For existing and still valid Maestro cards, the change will be gradual and take a maximum of 5 years, which is the lifespan of a debit card. Customers of the major Belgian banks will gradually see their Maestro cards replaced.

Other banks, especially those working with Visa, Mastercard's competitor, are not affected.

Mastercard is also implementing this change elsewhere in Europe where its Maestro brand was present, such as Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and more. In total, 100 million cards still need to be replaced.
